Honeycomb Preemie Hat

December 28, 2015:

Hi everyone,
I just found the neatest and and really fun tunisian ‎crochet stitch from Kim Guzman's book, Tunisian Crochet Stitch Guide.

I bought the book in November but up to today, I had not tried any of the sampler stitches out yet.

This particular sampler pattern is Stitch No. 16 on page 30 of the book.

This is a great book containing 61 pattern sampler stitches.   :)

Knit Hat-Tunisian Crochet Hat Comparison

Yesterday, I moved from knitted swatches to an actual project. I decided on this hat pattern, Fitted Beanie-Easy Knit Pattern at therainbowwarrior.org.

Check it out! I'm knitting! . This "die-hard " crocheter has discovered the joy of knitting needles and taught herself how to knit a little this Thanksgiving week! Yeah!

I was glad to figure out one thing in the directions which might be an omission. After making the ribbed cuff, it says to "K across all rows". Doesn't that make a garter stitch with purl and knit stitches on both sides?

Anyway, I looked it up on YouTube and decided that she must have meant Stockinette stitch for the rest of the hat. I learned that this means knit stitches on one side and pulls on the other.

After this hat is made, I am going to duplicate this in Tunisian crochet using the same yarn and the same size hook; I want to see how the pieces look side-by-side and see if the are the same size or not.

One thing that I am unsure about with knitting is that unlike crochet or tunisian crochet, the project is always on the needle(s) and it's not possible to try it on for size halfway through the project. I'm just not that good at knitting yet, to get a feel for how big it really is while still on the needles. I guess that comes with practice. LOL.

My Facebook page ‎post:
https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=1057623024271539&id=100000715551043&set=rpd.100000715551043&source=49&ref=bookmarks
But I am enjoying the heck out of this knitting! This is challenging and a real blast!

Knitting, I'm learning!

November 25, 2015, 3:00 pm CST:

I am learning how to knit at this very moment!‎    I found a very good video on the YouTube channel, americanknitter.‎  This lady has some very good instructions!

I'm getting used to knitting but I find crochet is much easier, probably because crochet is what I first learned to do.  While I was casting on, my left hand started to cramp, but it stopped after a while.

So for today, I learned to cast on, do a knit stitch and do a purl stitch.   I can see how the purl stitch in knitting is similar to a tunisian crochet purl stitch.

This is turning out to be so much fun.    I think I have another yarn craft to look forward to!    Yipee!

Silly Dog Hat

This is Sugar Pie.    :)

This is our sweet little, Cora.    :)

November 20, 2015:

Here's our fur baby,  Cora wearing this hat I made for her..   But it's a little small on her. where the cuff part sits on her head.

So, I tried it on my mom's doggy, Sugar.   It fit her better ‎but she shook it off pretty quickly.

This dog hat is easy and fun to make and works up quickly.    Here is where I found it:

Crochet Clouds!

We took a driving trip this past weekend and my husband says, "You need to take a picture of those clouds".

I had just mentioned that they looked like a  crochet edging‎ with picots.    LOL

I'm so glad I took this photo!   :). This was taken near Shreveport, Louisiana.

Slouchy Hat-Time!

November 8, 2015:
‎This is my first time to use this pretty yarn by Yarn Bee (aka, Hobby Lobby), called Fireside.   This color I'm using is, Party Time.    It's a size #5 yarn and it comes in a 6 oz /170 gram skein.   It has 185 yards/170 meters in the skein.

I think I like the Fireside yarn better than the one by Lionbrand called, Homespun yarn.   But I love Homespun too!

I am really enjoying  the long striping which the has before it changes colors!

I'm making a slouchy hat design called, Easy Perfect Fit Hat Pattern from Jayda InStitches on youtube.com.

Tunisian Crochet Pulled Gather!

September 29, 2015:

I finally came up with a way to do a tunisian crochet finishing gather such as at the top of a hat, instead of doing several rows of decreases.     Yippee!

This is for a hat worked in rows using a regular tunisian or afghan stitch crochet hook.    I have not figured out how to do this with a double-ended tunisian hook, but that would be a neat thing to figure out.

In this particular example, I am using the "I Love This Yarn" by Hobby Lobby (worsted weight #4 yarn),  and a size M/N, 9.00 mm, US #13 size tunisian hook

My tunisian decreases don't look too good and I like the look of this pulled gather much better anyway.

I have a video of how to do this pulled gather on my YouTube  channel‎, if you would like to see this.
http://youtu.be/3wxxvDeBJ7U

On the last row of your work and after completing the forward pass, you simply pull through all of those loops on your hook at one time instead of working them off two at a time.

That's it; it's very simple to do.   I thank you for visiting my blog and I hope you view and enjoy the video too.

Please take a moment to subscribe and also to subscribe to my YouTube channel (see below).

Madcap and Angel Fleece Yarn Preemie Hats

September 23,2015:

I love this Madcap and Angel Fleece yarn for preemie hats! So soft!

Has anyone ever used the Madcap yarn before?

What are some good things to make with it besides hats?

I picked up a skein of soft green and 3 skeins of orange - all on the clearance rack!    Yeah!

Twisty Cabled Beanie Hat!

September 23, 2015:

I love this hat pattern from Kim's website, http://crochetkim.com !

It's so easy to make and works up very quickly.

I used two hook sizes.   A size M/N (9.00 mm) for the body of the hat and a size H ‎(5.00 mm) for the brim.   I love the way this brim is made on this hat pattern.

You don't need to make this with a fancy yarn, just a basic acrylic will do in a size #4 worsted weight.

Lee Ann's Tunisian Ribbed Hat Finished!

September 13, 2015:

‎How did I do?

Remember my previous post about how I had just learned the tunisian Purl stitch and how I was making the Tunisian Ribbed Hat at Yarnspirations.com yesterday?
Well, I finished the hat today!    I love that Purl stitch.   It takes a little more effort to do the purls, but it is worth it!

I made this with Red Heart Super Saver in the color, Medium Sage and I used a 6.0 mm hook (J or US #10).

And since I used the RH Super Saver yarn, I made my base chain 62 and this is fine for an adult-sized hat.

Tunisian Rib Hat-My Attempt

September 12, 2015:

This is my attempt at the Tunisian Rib Hat pattern. I saw the tunisian Purl stitch demonstrated by Mikey on youtube, in the video for this pattern and I liked it. The stitch takes a little longer to do, but the result is worth it!

So, I went to Yarnspirations.com and downloaded the free pattern and I love it! I am using the recommended 6.0 mm hook in the pattern, but with Red Heart Super Saver yarn. I want to get some of this new Bernat Super Value Stripes yarn soon.

*** NOTE:   Since I'm using the Red Heart yarn, I only chained 62 for my foundation chain and it fits my 23-inch head just fine.

September 9, 2015:

I finished my Fortune's Shawlette CAL today! I love this pattern and it's well-written.   The chart is so easy to read too!   This was fun to make!

I used two full skeins plus part of a third one), of Debra Norville Serenity sock yarn in the color, Hibiscus.   This is a #1 fingering-weight yarn.

And I used the recommended size J/6.0 mm hook too.   The Japanese hook size is 10/0.

Hybrid Preemie Hat

September 4, 2015:

I figured out how I could crochet these ears on this morning, Yipee!    I don't like sewing separate pieces on.

So, I undid the last few stitches on the ears and attached them to the hat. Now, all that's left to be done is to take the two ends from the ears, and pull them to the inside of the hat with a crochet hook. Then, tie them off with two true square knots.

Mouse hats for Preemies!

August 31, 2015:

I just love this particular baby hat pattern.   For both the Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse hats, I am not sewing on the buttons for safety concerns.    I'm thinking choking hazard‎ and I don't want that in the NICU ward.

I made two hats using 4.0 mm and 4.5 mm hooks.   There is a slight difference in size as indicated in the photograph.
This is Sarah's pattern at therepeatcrafterme.com blog. This is a terrific pattern and it works up quickly.

Double-Ended Crochet Hook

August 7, 2015:

I have been trying to work some sort of small, round project‎ in a circular pattern in tunisian afghan-stitch crochet.    I want to learn because my sewn seams don't look too good and I figure the double-ended hook will help eliminate the seam.

I think it is finally "clicking" with me on the way the double-ended hook actually works.

So, I am really loving my double-ended tunisian crochet hook, now that I know, a small amount, how to use it!

Please feel free to leave a comment and I welcome any suggestions and helpful hints.    :)

Bernat Baby Blanket yarn on the Knifty Knitter!

July 31, 2015:

Bernat Baby Blanket yarn on the Knifty Knitter!

Trying out a chunky yarn on the Knifty Knitter today.  I am using a single strand of Bernat Baby Blanky yarn.  This yarn is soooooo soft - I love it!

Mom had this yarn and it was so thick that it hurt her hands to work with it....her hands tired easily.   I tried to talk her into getting a good quality crochet hook, but she likes her Susan Bates inline hooks.   My hook of choice are Clover Amour and Clover Amure hooks (Japanese sized).

I had the idea to try some of that super-soft Bernat Baby Blanket chunky yarn today on my blue Knifty Knitter handheld loom.

It seemed to work out nicely with a single strand! Soft enough for the NICU preemie hats and still has some good stretchiness to the hats.

My first Tunisian Crochet WIP!

Tuesday, July 21, 2015:

To add this to your Ravelry Queue, click here!

Yesterday, I finished my first -ever Tunisian Crochet ‎project.   It is called, Ribbed Hat and it is one of Kim Guzman's free patterns at her

website, http://www.crochetkim.com

This hat is worked in tunisian crochet‎ rows from the bottom brim of the hat, to the top of the hat.   The rows have a decrease as you get towards
the top and the piece flares out towards the bottom.

As for the curling, that is "the nature of the beast" when crocheting.   There is nothing wrong, it just curls.

When the back seam is sewn, this takes care of the curling problem.

Some of these are not the best photos of the finished project because
they were taken indoors in incandescent lighting and at night....no sunlight.

Please comment below and feel free to sign up for my email notifications.    Thanks for visiting!

Broomstick Lace Hat

July 10, 2015:

I decided to pick up my 50 mm knitting needle today and try a stitch which I haven't done in years, Broomstick Lace!   I think it is also referred to as, Peacock Eyelet Stitch.

Anyhow, I have been wanting to make a hat with Broomstick Lace and I settled on a video by Ruby Stedman on youtube.    Here is her link for the one in the video:

She gives very good instructions as she takes you through the video.   I have only watched the video through Row 4, so far and I hope the instructions continue to be good to the end.

In addition to the big old honking knitting needle, I am also using a crochet hook size J, 6.0mm, 10/0 (Japanese) and some old yarn from my stash, Caron Perfect Match #4 worsted weight.   :)

Fast forward a couple of hours later and Ta+da!   This hat is finished!    I didn't realize how easy decreasing in Broomstick Lace Crochet would be!

Fixing Knifty Knitter problems!

July 10, 2015:

While I like the hard plastic on the Knifty Knitter handheld looms since it makes the yarn slide down easily on the pegs‎, I do find that they have their defects!    And these are really starting to work on my last nerve!

Problem 1:    The pegs move around when you knit on these looms.    They work their way out of their holes and they twist.

Problem 2 (BIG ANNOYANCE) : THE GROOVE IN EACH PEG EXTENDS DOWN INTO THE HOLE IN THE CIRCULAR PART OF THE LOOM.   Grrrrr!   The only purpose this serves is for your pick tool to constantly get caught in that hole.   I'm afraid that the tip of the metal will break off and hit me in the eye one day.

So, to fix both defects, I got out the bottle of Elmer's Glue-All.   I thought about using Gorilla Glue, but that stuff really expands as it dries; it's an excellent glue but I wasn't sure if it would be right for this job.

However, if the Elmer's doesn't work, I'm getting my Gorilla Glue!

This is taking several applications of squeezing small amounts of white glue into the hole and letting it dry gradually.   Then, I add more as needed.    I would rather have a bulge there instead of an irritating entry point for my pick tool.

***Update:    don't use the Gorilla Glue.   It does expand but it dries with a very rough finish.    I sanded the glue spots down and it didn't do much good. The white glue is your best bet between the two.

Is it just me or does anyone else have this problem with their Knifty Knitters?

***Update, July 11, 2015:

I created a video of this process at:

Albasha's Lebanese Iced Tea Recipe

July 10, 2015:

After just having enjoyed a nicely delicious glass of Lebanese Iced Tea at Albasha restaurant, I decided to see what recipes I could find for Lebanese tea.

Bam!   First link I tried was at chowhound.com and it was in the form of a comment.    Well, you know I had to do a screenshot at that point.

I have no idea if this is their recipe; I only have the description to go on from the person who posted the comment back in 2008.   ‎I imagine that this recipe makes a pretty big quantity too. :).   ‎But, it's a starting point!

Made two more knitted rubber band grips and repaired another

July 9, 2015:

My knitted rubber band grip on my Knifty Knitter pick tool has been slowly coming apart lately.   Goodness knows that I have been putting some mileage on it with all the preemie hats I have been making since February of this year.

I figured that I had to carefully un-knit a few of the rows to be able to pull out the severed rubber bands.    I then I carefully loaded the six knit points onto my rectangle loom and started knitting from there. I had to re-knit four rounds/rows.

The other two pick tools don't have the long points, so I didn't knit those covers quite as long. I didn't want one side to fall off of the end or something.

These knitted rubber grips make all the difference and make it soooo much easier to knit on the handheld looms.

My previous blog post has additional photographs and a link to a video:
