Wheat Motif Bolero

After almost pulling out my hair over this pretty pattern, I am glad to say that I am finished.

I just have some loose ends which need sewing and the final picture I need to take with all of the edgings finished.

I had a hard time memorizing this motif pattern. Then I put the squares together wrong ... Just one thing after another.

But, it's finished now and on a hangar.

These are the gauges I came up with after completing my bolero.  I simply made a loose chain of 28 and worked 6 rows of dc stitches.

6 Dc rows equals 2 1/2 inches or 6 1/2 cm.

5 Dc equals 1 inch or 2 1/2 cm.

 

Wheat Motif Bolero, Vest, Jacket (10 large squares), March 11, 2012

Hi everyone,

My latest bolero which I have named, "Wheat Motif Bolero."

This is the simple picot edging on this bolero.  It's the same edging featured on the pattern except that I am not doing a ch-1 between the double crochets or the picots.  I find that the chain-1 made it ruffle a little too much and I didn't want the ruffled effect.

However, a ruffled edging would look pretty good.  I guess it depends on what your preferences are.  Here is the pattern:

 Since there is not a gauge indicated on this pattern, mine turned out a little larger than pictured on the model.  Also being made with a cotton yarn, it is likely to shrink somewhat, so that little extra largeness might work in my favor.

I am on the last little bit (the edging) of what I call my Wheat Motif Bolero made with 10 large squares.

Here's how it looks as of tonight when I took pictures:

To be honest, these squares were a little hard to memorize and I had to keep referring to the pattern all the way through the 10th square.   Ugh!

Then, I couldn't seem to piece these squares together correctly, attaching the wrong sides together, having a right and a wrong side showing in the back, etc, etc, etc .... one problem after another.   And this pattern looks so simple on paper!  Felt like I ripped out more than I actually crocheted.

Since it is too large to carry around, I just wind portions of it into balls and use it that way.  We have a digital scale at work and I can weigh the finished bolero to get the amount of yarn I used.  If I can't use that scale, there is always one at the post office.

Here is the hook size and I'm holding it up against the front edge of the garment.  I have not started the edging on this part yet.

This is the most unusual bolero or shrug pattern I've seen:

It seems like it is fairly simple to make and I would love to give this one a try.  The webpage is in Portuguese but this is what my web browser translated into English:

The work begins with a point total chain that reaches the desired height of the work. More than 11 chains. On the way back run 5 lows, chain started in the 11th. This will form a argolinha, which already is the work-tape passes. Continues to work doing so many chains, the same number of them under until they reach the other end, already reduced by 5 points, which will run five points down at the turn of work, five chains, to pucker that will finish the work , 5 points lower, and thereafter follows the same work from previous row, until the end of the work.

Example: 1st row: 60 + 11 chain chain. 2nd row: 5 lows in the 11 th chain, 50 chains, 5 lows, 11 chains. Repeated until the end of the work, that is, until it reaches the size of the circumference of the chest. Place the ribbon on the dowel and ready.

These can be tricky to make, but manageable.  I've made the grey colored one before and it was a blast, once I got the hang of it.

The charts which go with these are on the above weblink, next to the flower you want to make.



I haven't used yarn to make one of these, but I imagine that a nice (non-fuzzy) yarn would work up well in one of these patterns.   :)

December 4, 2011: Pineapple Neck Warmers, Easy Lotus Scarves from Annie's Attic & Baby Bib for Niece

Hi everyone,

One really good thing about football season is that with back-to-back football games, I get a lot more crocheting done.  The thrill of the game keeps me in my chair so that I can crochet!

I worked up 2 more Pineapple Neck Warmers using a size H Clover hook.  One is red made with Lion Brand MicroSpun yarn (soooo soft!)

The pink one is made with Lion Brand Baby Soft yarn and a size H Clover hook.

Just for fun, I made up a Pineapple Neck Warmer with some Department 71 Perle Cotton size 8 thread and a Clover hook, size 4 (this is smaller than a size 4 US hook, by the way).  This was something I wanted to try just to do it:

I bought an electronic pattern from Annie's Attic this weekend called, Easy Lotus Scarves.  I love this pattern too and whipped up two of them with Lion Brand Baby Soft yarn and a Clover size H hook.

There is a laptop computer under there ..... somewhere!  LOL











And lastly, here is the baby bib I am making for my niece for a baby shower.  She's registered at walmart.com and Babies R Us, but I figured that she won't be getting a thread crocheted baby bib and bootie set from either of these places.  So, I dug out my pattern and started one for her using Aunt Lydia's size 10 thread and a Tulip size 12, 1.0mm crochet hook:
